How to apply for the residence permit

The visa issued by the Italian Representative is a permission to enter Italy. To stay for the duration of your studies it is mandatory to apply for the residence permit (permit of stay).

A residence permit/permit of stay is not required for business, tourism, short visits or study, provided that the stay does not exceed 3 months. EU nationals do not need a residence permit to stay in Italy.

In order to apply for the residence permit you are going to need the following documents:

  • Copy of all the pages of your passport (to do after you arrive because there has to be the stamp you get when entering Italy)
  • Your original passport
  • Copy of your student visa (which is attached to one of the pages of the passport)
  • Copy of your admission letter and or University Enrollment document issued by the Administrative Office and completed with the 16€ Revenue stamp
  • Copy of you italian fiscal code certificate
  • Copy of your credit/debit card
  • Accomodation proof
  • Health Insurance certificate
  • 4 photos (passport format)

Take all this documents to the International Students’ Help Desk. There is one at the Scientifc Campus (via Ferrata 3 – Wedsneday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) and in the town centre (via Sant’Agostino 1- Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.). They are going to provide the Residence Permit kit and help you fill all the forms.

The forms with all the listed documents has to submitted at the post office. There you are going to get the information about you appointment with the “Questura”, the italian police department that manage the permit of stay applications. At the appointment you are going to need:

  • Receipt of your permit of stay application
  • 4 passport size photos
  • Original Passport

If for any reasons you did not include the mandatory documents with your original application, you have to hand them over at your appointment.
